About Casetext, Inc.

Casetext, Inc. was founded in 2013 by Jake Heller and Laura Safdie in San Francisco, California, to build software that applies artificial intelligence and natural language processing to legal research and document review. The company grew out of the idea that legal research, traditionally dominated by manual review of case law and statutes, could be made faster and more accurate through machine learning.

The company's flagship product, CoCounsel, launched in 2023, is an AI legal assistant built on OpenAI's GPT-4 that performs tasks such as document review, legal research memos, deposition preparation, and contract analysis. Casetext also previously offered a legal research platform that indexed case law, statutes, and regulations, competing with established providers such as Westlaw and LexisNexis. Its customers included law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies.

Casetext raised approximately $113 million in venture funding from investors including August Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Canvas Ventures over its history. In June 2023, Thomson Reuters announced its acquisition of Casetext for $650 million in cash, one of the largest acquisitions in legal technology at the time, integrating CoCounsel into Thomson Reuters' legal products including Westlaw.
