Claude Opus 5.5 is Anthropic's current Opus-tier model, released September 22, 2026 as the successor to Claude Opus 5 and the first of Anthropic's 5.5-generation models (Sonnet 5.5 followed on September 28). Anthropic says it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing about 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads, and it cut every Opus rate to $4 input and $20 output per million tokens. Independent boards back the claim: it debuted first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (58, against 53 for Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra) and first on the LMArena WebDev board. Anthropic's model guide now tells customers to start with Opus 5.5 for most workloads. The one-sentence take for a buyer: this is the model to standardize on for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work, once you have handled four breaking API changes from Opus 5.
