About edX

edX was founded in 2012 by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a nonprofit online learning venture, headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The platform was created to host massive open online courses (MOOCs) from partner institutions, offering free and paid access to courses, professional certificates, and degree programs.

edX hosts content from universities including Harvard, MIT, and Berkeley, as well as corporate partners such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Its offerings include MicroMasters programs, professional certificates, and full online degrees delivered in partnership with accredited institutions. The platform competes with Coursera and Udacity in the online education market.

In 2021, edX was acquired by 2U, Inc., a publicly traded online education company, for approximately $800 million, ending its run as a nonprofit organization. 2U later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024, after which the edX brand and related assets were acquired by Axim Collaborative, a nonprofit spun out of the original edX mission.
