Weaviate is an open-source vector database company founded in 2019 by Bob van Luijt and Etienne Dilocker, headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The company develops a database engine designed to store and query high-dimensional vector embeddings alongside structured data, enabling applications such as semantic search, recommendation systems, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

Weaviate's core product is its eponymous open-source vector database, which supports multiple vectorization modules and integrates with machine learning models from providers including OpenAI, Cohere, and Hugging Face. The database is available as a self-hosted open-source deployment and as a managed cloud service called Weaviate Cloud Services (WCS). It is used by developers and enterprises building AI-powered search and data retrieval applications.

Weaviate raised a $16 million Series A round in 2022 led by Cortical Ventures, followed by a $50 million Series B round in 2023 led by Index Ventures, bringing total funding to approximately $68 million. The company has grown alongside broader industry adoption of large language models and vector search infrastructure, with its GitHub repository accumulating significant open-source community activity.
