xAI is an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk in March 2023 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The company was established with a stated focus on building AI systems oriented toward understanding the physical universe, and its primary product is Grok, a large language model-based assistant.

Grok is integrated directly into X (formerly Twitter) and is accessible to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers. The assistant is designed to answer questions, generate text, analyze images, and engage with real-time information drawn from posts on X. Grok distinguishes itself from some competing models by its access to live data from the X platform and a stated willingness to engage with a broader range of topics. As of 2024, xAI released Grok-1 as open-source under an Apache 2.0 license, and subsequently launched Grok-1.5 and Grok-2 with expanded capabilities including vision and multimodal inputs.

xAI raised a $6 billion Series B funding round in May 2024, bringing its reported valuation to $24 billion. The company employs several hundred people, drawing heavily from former researchers at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Brain, and other AI labs. In 2024, xAI announced a merger agreement with X Corp, further tightening the operational and product relationship between the two entities.
