Mistral AI

Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence company founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, all former researchers at DeepMind and Meta. Headquartered in Paris, the company develops large language models and distributes many of them under open-weight licenses, positioning itself as an alternative to closed-model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Mistral's primary products include the Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, and Mistral Large model families, available via its La Plateforme API and through partnerships with cloud providers including Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS. The company also offers Mistral Small and Codestral, a model targeted at code generation tasks. Its models are used by enterprises for tasks including text generation, summarization, classification, and code completion.

Mistral raised a €105 million seed round in June 2023, followed by a €385 million Series A in December 2023 led by Andreessen Horowitz, and a €600 million Series B in June 2024 at a valuation of approximately €6 billion. The company had approximately 200–400 employees as of mid-2024 and entered a commercial partnership with Microsoft that included a minority investment alongside the Series B round.
