xAI

xAI is an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk in March 2023 and headquartered in Palo Alto, California. The company was established with a stated focus on building AI systems designed to understand the physical universe and avoid outcomes harmful to humanity. Its founding team includes several researchers and engineers previously from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Brain, and Tesla.

xAI's primary product is Grok, a large language model chatbot integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) platform and available via a standalone app and API. Grok has access to real-time data from X, differentiating it from some competing models. The company also operates Colossus, a supercomputer cluster built in Memphis, Tennessee, which as of late 2024 comprised approximately 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with plans to expand further. Grok models are also offered through xAI's API for third-party developers.

xAI raised a $6 billion Series B round in May 2024 at a reported valuation of $24 billion, followed by an additional $6 billion raise in late 2024, bringing total disclosed funding to approximately $12 billion. In 2025, xAI merged with X Corp in an all-stock deal that valued xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion. The company has grown rapidly since founding, with headcount estimated in the low thousands as of early 2025.
