Brave Software, Inc. was founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy in San Francisco, California. Eich, the creator of JavaScript and a co-founder of Mozilla, launched Brave to address privacy and data-tracking concerns embedded in mainstream browsers and search engines. The company operates as an independent, privately held entity headquartered at 580 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA.

Brave's flagship product is the Brave browser, a free, open-source browser available on desktop and mobile that blocks third-party ads and trackers by default. The company also operates Brave Search, one of the few Western search engines running an independent web index not reliant on Google or Bing APIs. Additional products include Brave Ads, Brave VPN, Brave Wallet, Brave Leo (an AI assistant), Brave Talk (video calling), and a Basic Attention Token (BAT) rewards system for content creators.

Brave raised approximately $7 million in angel investment in 2016 from firms including Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, Propel Venture Partners, and Pantera Capital, followed by a $35 million token offering for its Basic Attention Token in 2017. The company employs approximately 350 people globally and remains privately held as of 2026.
