Collibra

Collibra is a software company that builds a platform for data and AI governance, giving enterprises tools to catalog, manage, monitor, and control their data across the organization. The company was founded in 2008 as a spin-off from the STARLab semantic-technology research group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel by Felix Van de Maele, Stijn (Stan) Christiaens, Pieter De Leenheer, Damien Trog, and Christophe Gijbels. Van de Maele serves as chief executive officer, and the company runs dual headquarters in New York and Brussels, Belgium.

Collibra's platform combines a data catalog, data governance, data lineage, data quality and observability, data privacy, and AI governance into a single system used by data teams to define ownership, track how data moves, and enforce policy. Its customers are concentrated among large regulated enterprises, including banks, telecommunications carriers, and consumer brands such as Adobe and Heineken. The company competes with providers such as Alation, Informatica, and the metadata and governance offerings of the major cloud vendors.

Collibra has raised roughly $596 million across nine funding rounds from investors including Sequoia Capital Global Equities, Sofina, CapitalG, Iconiq Capital, Index Ventures, Battery Ventures, and Durable Capital Partners. Its Series G round of $250 million in November 2021 more than doubled its valuation to $5.25 billion. The company employs roughly 1,100 people and has expanded its platform through acquisitions, including data-quality vendor OwlDQ and database-monitoring firm SQLdm in 2021.
