About Crusoe Energy Systems LLC

Crusoe Energy Systems LLC develops, builds and operates data centers and cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads, siting capacity next to low-cost and otherwise stranded energy sources. The company was founded in 2018 by Chase Lochmiller, who serves as chief executive officer and chairman, and Cully Cavness, president and chief strategy officer, and is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Crusoe began with Digital Flare Mitigation, converting natural gas that would otherwise be flared at oil wells into electricity for modular data centers, before shifting its focus to AI infrastructure.

The company's offerings span data center development, construction and operations, and Crusoe Cloud, a GPU cloud platform running NVIDIA hardware for AI training and inference. Its flagship project is a roughly 1.2-gigawatt, multi-building campus in Abilene, Texas, built through a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital and Primary Digital Infrastructure, which serves Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and OpenAI's Stargate program; the first buildings went live in 2025 running NVIDIA GB200 racks. In March 2025, Crusoe sold its bitcoin mining business to NYDIG to concentrate entirely on AI infrastructure.

Crusoe has raised roughly $2.8 billion across equity and debt rounds. It closed a $350 million Series C in 2022, a $600 million Series D in December 2024 at a $2.8 billion valuation led by Founders Fund, and a $1.375 billion Series E in October 2025 at a valuation above $10 billion, co-led by Valor Equity Partners and Mubadala Capital with participation from NVIDIA, Fidelity, Founders Fund and others. The company employs several hundred people across its Denver headquarters, regional offices and data center sites.

Competitive Landscape

Who Crusoe Energy Systems LLC competes with, and how they differ.

CoreWeave logo
CoreWeave8.1/10

The closest peer "neocloud" — both lease large-scale NVIDIA GPU capacity to AI labs and hyperscalers on long-term contracts, but CoreWeave IPO'd on Nasdaq in March 2025 while Crusoe stays private and pairs its cloud with in-house power generation (flare gas, natural gas, and newer nuclear/battery deals).

Nebius Group N.V. logo
Nebius Group N.V.8.1/10

Targets the same GPU-cloud-for-AI-training market but is Amsterdam-domiciled and Nasdaq-listed, having spun out of Yandex in 2024 with an initial data center footprint in Finland rather than Crusoe's US flare-gas and stranded-power origins.

RunPod logo
RunPod8.1/10

Competes for the same GPU-rental developer base with per-second serverless and pod pricing, but targets individual developers and smaller AI teams rather than Crusoe's gigawatt-scale hyperscaler contracts (Stargate, Meta, Oracle).

Cerebras logo
Cerebras8.0/10

Competes for large AI training and inference budgets with a fundamentally different technical approach — proprietary wafer-scale chips (CS-3) instead of Crusoe's NVIDIA/AMD GPU clusters — and is pursuing its own IPO in 2026.

Groq logo
Groq7.7/10

Competes for AI inference workloads through its own custom LPU chips and API/cloud service, positioning on inference speed and cost per token rather than Crusoe's GPU-cluster rental and large-scale training capacity.

Oracle logo
Oracle7.8/10

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure runs its own GPU superclusters that compete with Crusoe Cloud for enterprise AI-training contracts, even though Oracle is simultaneously Crusoe's flagship customer at the Abilene, TX Stargate campus that Crusoe built and operates the physical infrastructure for.
