Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an American nonprofit educational organization founded in 2008 by Sal Khan, headquartered in Mountain View, California. Khan originally created the platform to tutor his cousins remotely, posting instructional videos to YouTube before formally incorporating as a nonprofit. The organization's mission is to provide free, world-accessible education to anyone with an internet connection.

The platform offers instructional videos, practice exercises, and personalized learning dashboards covering subjects including mathematics, science, computing, humanities, and test preparation for standardized exams such as the SAT and LSAT. Khan Academy also operates Khan Academy Kids, a free app for children ages 2–8, and Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutoring assistant launched in 2023. The platform is used by students, teachers, and parents globally, and has partnerships with school districts and organizations including College Board.

Khan Academy has received significant philanthropic funding from donors including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, and Bank of America, though it operates as a nonprofit rather than a venture-backed company. As of the mid-2020s, the organization employs several hundred people. In 2023, Khan Academy launched Khanmigo, built on OpenAI's GPT-4, marking a significant expansion into AI-assisted tutoring tools.
