Voyage AI

Voyage AI was founded in 2023 by Tengyu Ma, a Stanford computer science professor, to build state-of-the-art embedding and reranking models specialized for retrieval-augmented generation use cases. The company released a series of voyage-* embedding models (voyage-3, voyage-large-2, voyage-code-2, voyage-finance-2, voyage-law-2, voyage-multimodal) and reranking models targeting domain-specific RAG workloads.

MongoDB acquired Voyage AI in February 2025 for approximately $220 million to integrate native embedding generation and reranking into MongoDB Atlas vector search. Voyage AI continues to offer its models as a standalone API.

Pre-acquisition, Voyage AI was headquartered in Palo Alto, California and raised approximately $20 million in seed and Series A rounds from CRV, Wing Venture Capital, and others.
