About Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is an artificial intelligence research organization headquartered in London, UK. It was formed in April 2023 through the merger of two Alphabet AI units: DeepMind, originally founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, and Google Brain, which had operated since 2011. Demis Hassabis serves as CEO of the combined entity. Google acquired the original DeepMind in 2014 for a reported £400 million.

The organization conducts research across reinforcement learning, large language models, protein structure prediction, and general-purpose AI. Its most prominent outputs include AlphaFold, a system that predicted the 3D structures of over 200 million proteins and is widely used in biological and pharmaceutical research, and Gemini, a family of multimodal large language models deployed across Google products and available via API. Other notable systems include AlphaGo, AlphaZero, and Genie. DeepMind's research has been published in journals including Nature and Science.

Google DeepMind operates as a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker GOOGL. The organization employs several thousand researchers and engineers across offices in London, Mountain View, New York, Paris, and other locations. It does not raise external funding independently, operating under Alphabet's corporate structure. In 2024, Hassabis was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry alongside John Jumper for the development of AlphaFold.
