It was formed in April 2023 through the merger of two Alphabet AI units: DeepMind, originally founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, and Google Brain, which had operated since 2011. Demis Hassabis serves as CEO of the combined entity. Google acquired the original DeepMind in 2014 for a reported £400 million.
