New Relic was founded in 2008 by Lew Cirne to provide application performance monitoring (APM) as a SaaS product. The platform has since expanded into a unified observability suite covering APM, infrastructure, browser and mobile monitoring, synthetics, logs, network performance, and AI-driven incident intelligence.

The company went public on the NYSE in 2014 under ticker NEWR and was taken private in November 2023 in a $6.5 billion acquisition by private equity firms Francisco Partners and TPG. Ashan Willy succeeded Bill Staples as CEO in 2024.

Headquartered in San Francisco, New Relic employs approximately 2,000 people across offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, and India.
