Windsurf

Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, is an AI-native integrated development environment headquartered in Mountain View, California. The company was founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, originally as Exafunction before pivoting to AI-assisted developer tooling and rebranding to Codeium, then later to Windsurf.

The company's primary product is the Windsurf IDE, which includes an agentic AI assistant called Cascade designed to understand entire codebases and automate multi-step coding tasks. Prior to the acquisition, Codeium also offered extensions for popular editors such as VS Code, JetBrains, and Neovim, and had reported tens of thousands of individual and enterprise users across its platform.

Cognition AI, the company behind the AI software engineer Devin, announced the acquisition of Windsurf in May 2025 for a reported $2.5 billion, with the deal closing in July 2025. Prior to the acquisition, Codeium had raised approximately $77 million in venture funding, including a $65 million Series B round in 2023 led by General Catalyst.
