Zed Industries, Inc. develops Zed, a high-performance code editor written in Rust with built-in AI assistance and real-time collaboration. The company was founded in 2021 by Nathan Sobo, Max Brunsfeld, and Antonio Scandurra — the team behind GitHub's Atom editor, the Electron framework, and the Tree-sitter parsing library — and is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.

Zed's flagship editor runs on GPUI, a GPU-accelerated UI framework the company built, and is positioned as a faster alternative to Electron-based tools such as Visual Studio Code, with near-instant startup and low-latency editing. The editor was open-sourced in 2024 and has drawn more than 1,100 contributors and over 150,000 active developers as of August 2025. Recent releases focus on agentic editing, allowing AI agents to write and modify code directly inside the editor.

The company has raised $44.5 million to date, including a $10 million Series A in 2023 and a $32 million Series B announced in August 2025, led by Sequoia Capital with participation from Redpoint Ventures, Root Ventures, Matchstick Ventures, and V1.VC, plus angel investors including Figma's Dylan Field and GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner. Alongside the Series B, Zed announced DeltaDB, an operation-based version control system that tracks code changes at edit-level granularity. The company employs roughly 45 people as of early 2026.
