Gupshup

Gupshup operates a conversational AI and business messaging platform that enables companies to reach and support customers across WhatsApp, RCS, SMS, voice, and chat. The company was founded in 2004 by Beerud Sheth, who started it as an SMS-based social messaging service in India before pivoting to enterprise messaging, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Its Conversation Cloud combines the WhatsApp Business API, RCS business messaging, chatbot tooling, and AI agents that automate marketing, commerce, and customer support. Gupshup says it processes more than 120 billion messages a year for over 50,000 business customers across more than 130 countries, with particular strength in India, where WhatsApp is the dominant channel, and further operations in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Beerud Sheth serves as chief executive officer.

Gupshup has raised more than $600 million since inception. It reached unicorn status in April 2021 with a $100 million Series F round led by Tiger Global at a $1.4 billion valuation, followed by a further $240 million in July 2021, though later investors including Fidelity subsequently marked down the valuation. In July 2025 the company added roughly $60 million in equity and debt from Globespan Capital Partners and EvolutionX Debt Capital. Gupshup employs several hundred people and has grown through acquisitions including voice provider Knowlarity, RCS firm DotGo, and conversational-AI startups Active.ai and AskSid; it has explored a public listing in India.
